Event comments
Hours are Monday - Friday 10 am - 7 pm, Saturday 9 am-6 pm & Sunday 9 am - 5 pm. Call to confirm they are open on holidays. The West Newton Bicycle Shop is closed on New Years Eve. They sell, rent and repair bikes and are located next to the trailhead. ***** Bicycle helmets must be worn. ***** Most of the GAP has a firmly-packed crushed limestone surface,. Recommend you use a bicycle with a wider tire (i.e. hybrid or mountain bike rather than a road bike). The 17 miles between Pittsburgh and McKeesport has an asphalt surface. ***** There is a Trailside deli located above the Start point, which can prepare a picnic lunch for purchase. A 1K option if you visit the West Newton Historic Cemetery. NO FREE BIKING.

Event information
This event is on the western portion of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) which is considered one of the best rail trails in the nation; the entire 342K of the trail from Point State Park in Pittsburgh east to Cumberland, MD is sanctioned as an extended distance bike event. Start where you wish, bike east or west, and ride as far as you desire. If you want to do an out and back bike ride on the entire length of the trail, it is possible to do a 342K ride. Directions will be provided for a 13K and 25K bike ride starting from the West Newton GAP Trailhead. Trail heads are identified at https://gaptrail.org/plan-a-visit/directions-parking

106 West Newton Street, West Newton, PA 15089 (724) 872-2185 From Interstate 70 take exit 43 onto PA-201N towards Donora. Turn right onto Rostraver Rd/PA-201. Veer right onto PA-136. The West Newton Bicycle Shop will be on your right, before crossing the bridge. The Trailside Restaurant is above the WN Bicycle Shop. The Gap is right off their parking lot. Entire GAP is sanctioned.
