Event comments

There are two 5K loops; one is on the rail trail and the other is on sidewalks. Those doing 5K can do either loop. 10K walkers must do both loops. Wheelchairs and strollers will have little difficulty on rail trail. They will have more difficulty on the other trail because of inclines. CLOSED MONDAYS, Hours Sept - May: Sunday 12-4, Tues.-Sat. 10-4. Summer hours TBA. Visitor center phone (717) 449-5607. Special Programs: Underground Railroad - Wright's Ferry Mansion. Rockin' Around the Clock - National Watch and Clock Museum. America's Veterans - Zion Hill Cemetery.

Event information

This walk features the Civil War and Underground Railroad history of Columbia as well as the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail. Some historic sites that you will pass include Wrights Ferry Mansion, Mt. Bethel Cemetery and the Turkey Hill Experience. You will also pass Zion Hill Cemetery-the burial site of many black soldiers who fought in the Civil War. Some of these soldiers are from the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, who were portrayed in the 1989 film, Glory, starring Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman.

Driving to the start box

Harrisburg/North: Take I-83 South to Exit 21-US-30 East. *Take US-30 East to exit PA-441. At the stop sign Turn Right onto Linden St to N. 2nd Street. Turn Left onto N. 2nd Street to Walnut St. Turn right onto Walnut St. and follow to the start point. Gettysburg/West: Take US-30 East. Follow from *above. Lancaster/East: Take US-30 West to PA-441. Follow PA-441 to Walnut St. Right on Walnut St to start point.
