Event comments

The historic Algonquian-speaking American Indian tribe was the Mattawoman (likely a band of the Piscataway Indians) encountered by the first English settlers; the latter called the land, "Indian Head", meaning "Indian Peninsula." In August 1861 Union Brigadier General Joseph Hooker commanded the Third Brigade nearby. The site was also used by the Union Army Balloon Corps for reconnaissance of Confederate troop movements across the Potomac. Since 1890 it has been the site of a U.S. naval base specializing in gun and rocket propellants. During WW II, a German POW camp was established a few miles from Indian Head in Nanjemoy, Maryland. Today Indian Head is home to Charles Countys largest employer, the Indian Head Naval Support Facility. This walk includes a wonderful vista of Mattawoman Creek on the other side of Cornwallis Neck from Chapman State Park. Description: Indian Head is an incorporated city on a peninsula named Cornwallis Neck in Charles County, Maryland. The peninsula, a "head" of land, had been long occupied by various cultures of indigenous peoples.
