Hiking the A.T. is not for everyone, but doing even a short section is challenging and greatly satisfying. There are numerous points to hike up to the A.T. in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Event information
This is an extended distance event covering the 288 miles (463 km) of the AT in Tennessee. The terrain will be up and down, and trail difficulty will vary from 3B to 5E with an average 4D. Many sections of the AT are very rocky with lots of tree roots. Allow plenty of extra time to complete your hike. Check the weather forecast before beginning and be aware that weather (low temperatures, ice & snow, or thunderstorms) at higher elevations and far from help can be life threatening. You are advised to not hike alone. You should ensure that you have plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, use hiking poles, and have a first aid kit with you. Use insect repellent and routinely check for ticks. There are numerous guide books that cover the A.T. A recommended guide is "Exploring the Appalachian Trail - Hikes in the Southern Appalachians" which gives entry points for recommended day hikes, entry points, direction (north or south), and detailed trail descriptions.
