Route is on park trails that are 40% shaded. The hills on the nature trail are shell mounds left from the Park's first inhabitants, the Timucuan Indians.

The park opens at 8 a.m. Trail is rated 2B, is not suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. The island is accessible only by private boat or free park ferry.

how to get to the event

Driving to the start box

2309 River Ridge Rd. 386-736-5309. From I-4 take exit 118; SR 44 west about 7 miles thru DeLand; bear left on CR 4110 for 1.9 miles; left on CR 4125 for 3.4 miles. Turn left into the Hontoon Island State Park parking lot. Walk to the nearby boat dock. The ferry will come for you as soon as the captain sees you waiting. After exiting the ferry boat, walk to the buildings near the landing. There is no fee for either the short ferry ride, or entry into the state park. Please inform the boat captain or a ranger at the buildings that you are a Volksmarcher who needs the walk-box. The box is located in the office to the right of the park store, but the park staff has requested that walkers ask for the box before entering that door.
