Event comments
Butler County ***** Started in 1804, Harmony was the first home of the Harmony Society, a small group of German Pietists organized as a communitarian theocracy under the spiritual control of George Rapp. It was one of the most successful of America's many utopian communities. **** In 1802, Frederick William Dettmar Basse, widower and former Prussian Ambassador to Napoleons court in France, came to the United States. Leaving his four children in Frankfort, Germany, he hoped to rebuild his fortune. Basse bought 10,000 acres of Depreciation Lands for 25 cents an acre. He built a wooden castle, Bassenheim, laid out the streets of his town and named it Zelienople after his oldest daughter, Fredericka Wilhelmina (nicknamed Zelie). NO FREE WALKERS.
