Event information
The State Capitol Building is a jewel and well worth visiting. Before bridges, the railroad ended in Benicia at the Carquinez Strait. Trains were ferried by boat across the Carquinez Strait so they could continue on their way. The railroad depot is still standing. Pony Express riders continued on to Benicia if they missed the riverboat in Sacramento. The mail must go through! The town of Benicia is full of early California historic buildings, wonderful restaurants and creative shopping. The route goes past the Capitol building, through historic downtown, around the marina and on part of the Bay Area Trail along the Carquinez Straits. There is an approximate 50 yd section of dirt trail. Try to plan your walk so you can enjoy the great food at the start point.
