Description: Wonder why people spend months hiking the Pacific Crest Trail? This portion of the PCT will give you the answer! The mountain and valley scenes are ones only seen on picture postcards, the sky is clear and amazingly blue. The varied terrain is interesting and challenging. The route begins at 7200 feet and the elevation rises over 800 feet, so prepare for high altitude. The 8k turnaround is half-way up Castle Valley, while the 13k continues through boulder fields and along forest trails over Castle Pass and down to the Peter Grubb Hut in Round Valley. The first look at Round Valley is stunning! The benefits include outstanding High Sierra views and wildflowers, especially in June and July. At a minimum, carry water, food, and a jacket to prepare for the elements, including patches of snow! Wear hiking boots, a hat, sunscreen, and insect repellent. A walking stick is recommended.
