Everyone is encouraged to carry water. Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge patch is available at the Learning Center Book Store. Open 9 AM - 3:45 PM Mon - Sat; Noon - 3:45 PM on Sundays. Closed major holidays.

Event information

This walk is on trails of blacktop, gravel road, wood chips, and tall grass firebreak with small hills and tall grass natural prairie. Be aware the grass may be wet. Visit the Learning Center (free admission) to learn about the restoration of Iowa's natural prairies. Herds of Buffalo and Elk may be seen from the trails as they roam their vast fenced prairies. Closed major holidays. Pets are NOT allowed on the refuge.

Driving to the start box

9981 Pacific St, Prairie City, IA 50228 NSNWR is 25 miles east of Des Moines on Hwy 163. Exit at Prairie City. Follow blacktop 4.5 miles to Learning Center. From I-80 take Exit 155 (Colfax) south on Hwy 17 eight miles to Prairie City.
