Event comments

Part of the trail goes through and along the top of the Old Fort walls. This section is not suitable for strollers or handicapped. This section can be bypassed. Restrooms and water are available at the start/finish. Fort Monroe has transitioned most of the land to the Commonwealth of Virginia (Fort Monroe Authority). Fort Monroe was recently named a National Monument. Fort Monroe Authority plans to have a visitors center open sometime in the near future.

Event information

Tue-Sun 10:30am-4:30pm. Closed Mondays (except Memorial Day and Labor), Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. This walk is along roads on the Fort. Part of the trail goes through and along the top of the Old Fort walls.

how to get to the event

Driving to the start box

20 Bernard Road, Ft Monroe, VA 23651, 757-788-3391. I-64 to Hampton, Exit I-64 at Exit 268 Phoebus. Left at stop light to Mallory Street, approx 0.2 miles, right to E Mellon Street (SR E 143). Enter Historic Ft Monroe bearing right to McNair Road, past Historic Chamberlin Hotel/Senior Living (changes to Fenwick Road). Left at 1st stop sign, Ingalls Street. RIGHT at Ruckman Street . Drive over salllyport, moat and turn right, Bernard Road. Bernard Road curves left, Casemate Museum on RIGHT. Enter door marked EXIT. If door is locked, press buzzer on left of door. Museum personnel do not expect Volksmarchers to have to go thru front entrance, but if no one answers buzzer, you will have to walk thru front entrance through museum, to museum office. Volksmarch box in Museum Office (NOT sales office). Ask museum people (not sales office personnel) if you cannot find "walk" box. Park across from Casemate (on left by Casemate) DO NOT park between signs that say Museum Parking only. Construction may alter directions-any confusion ask for directions to Casemate Museum.
