Event information

According to tradition, Jesse Kirk, Kirksville's first postmaster, shared a dinner of turkey and whiskey with surveyors working in the area on the condition that they would name the town after him. Not only the first postmaster, Kirk was also the first to own a hotel and a tavern in Kirksville founded in 1857 in Adair County. Kirksville is home to two institutions of higher learning which you will enjoy as you walk through the city: Truman State University, originally the North Missouri Normal School and Commercial College, and more recently Northeast Missouri State University and A.T. Still University, home of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, the founding osteopathic medical and dental schools. As your walk through the town, you will enjoy seeing many buildings and homes that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places including: The Adair County Courthouse, Grim Building, Capt. Thomas C. Harris House, Journal Printing Company Building, Masonic Temple, Travelers Hotel, and Trinity Episcopal Church. Not too far away (but not on the walk) is Thousand Hills State Park. This large MO State Park has one of the nicest lakes in NE Missouri as well as several trails you may enjoy. A highlight of visiting this state park are the petroglyphs that were discovered during the creation of this man-made lake. A nice visitors center displays these historic artifacts.
