Stage coaches stopped here and hitched their horses at hitching posts around what is now known as "the Diamond." Passengers obtained food and supplies in local stores. The town grew slowly and became an incorporated borough in 1834. The Diamond, and its trademark Gazebo are the town's center, hosting concerts, dances and other community events.
