Event comments
This is a quiet walk on paved trails and sidewalks through a nice suburban community. It is rich in wildlife, including waterfowl and songbirds, and the occasional turtle. All walkers will pass the Bowie City Hall and Evergreen and Allen Ponds. The 10k trail also goes to Blacksox Park and past the National Capital Area Radio & Television Museum. Both trails finish back at the Bowie Town Center mall. There are dining opportunities in the mall to suit every pocketbook and taste. There are restrooms in Starbucks and the mall food court all year round and at several locations on the trail during the warm months. Both trails lie entirely within the City of Bowie and Prince George's County. Fee for IVV credit or non-IVV is $3.00. Children 12 and under walk for free (IVV credit included) courtesy of Freestate Happy Wanderers. Allen Pond Park is the City's premier 85-acre, multi-use park. It is home to the Bowie Ice Arena, the Robert V. Setera Amphitheater, and the Bowie Skate Park. It offers picnic facilities for rent. Fishing is allowed from the shore of Allen Pond, a 10-acre stocked pond. Persons 16 years of age and older must have a valid Maryland fishing license. The park is also home to Opportunity Park, offering 100% accessible activities in preschool and school-aged playgrounds. Blacksox Park is a 64-acre park primarily designed for baseball and softball, but also contains playgrounds for all ages. The park offers restrooms, in season, as well as a concession stand available for rent. A paved walking trail connects the playground and ball fields to the City's system of hiker/biker trails. Located in a 1906 storekeeper's house, the National Capital Radio and Television Museum explores broadcast history from the earliest days of wireless telegraph to the development of television. A fascinating collection of broadcast memorabilia includes depression-era cathedral radios, early televisions, "French fry" transistors, crystal sets, and even sound effects equipment
