Description: This gem of an open area between the Bay and Central Valley promises wonderful walks. The Los Vaqueros Reservoir is at the heart of the 18,500 acres of open space in the watershed designed to protect drinking water for 550,000 customers in Contra Costa County. Visitors may enjoy fishing, boating, picnicking, and 55 miles of hiking trails. An interpretive Visitors Center has displays about the watershed and the earliest human occupation centuries ago. Some sensitive wildlife species, such as Golden Eagles, may be seen and are protected. Trails are closed when Golden Eagles are nesting, usually in the spring.

Start Point / Driving Directions: From I-5 at Stockton, follow Hwy 4 WEST, passing Discovery Bay to Hwy J-4. Left on J-4 toward Byron and Camino Diablo Rd. Right on Camino Diablo to Walnut Blvd. Left on Walnut Blvd. and enter Los Vaqueros at the NORTH entrance from intersection of Walnut Blvd. and Camino Diablo. From the WEST and Bay Area along I-580 EAST exit at Vasco Rd. North. Continue on Vasco Rd. to Camino Diablo. Left on Camino Diablo to Walnut Blvd. Pay entrance fee and continue to Kellogg Creek Picnic Area.
Awards & Fees: IVV Credit Only
Comments: Water and restrooms at the start and along the trail. Strollers and wheelchairs may have difficulty due to gravel and dirt hilly trails. All are invited to a barbecue after the walk (donation).
