Event comments

This trail is through very sharp lava flows that can scrape shoes and cut hands and legs. It is recommended that a good walking stick be used to keep you steady, gloves to protect the hands, long pants for leg protection, and boots for the feet. Carry water as there is none on this trail.

Event information

Walk on sparsely defined trail marked with white bread loaf sized rocks through a lava field amoungst four foot high stacks of old volcanic lava with views of the Pacific Ocean and Haleakala Mountain. This trail in out in the open with little shade. Meandering through lava mounds on the trail that leads to "Old Kings Highway",(mark where you access the Kings Highway so you can find the trail when you return) used to herd cattle down to Keawanaku Bay for loading onto ships. After a respite at the shady bay return to La Perouse Bay's small parking lot and site of an original historic village.
